Most of us are lazy, new health study finds

2014-10-28 07:00

Discovery Vitality released its ObeCity Index last week compiled from research done on 170 000 members of Discovery’s Vitality programme.

Participants in the study were asked to answer in-depth questions about their habits and lifestyle.

Health is the key that South Africans need to get the country’s economy and productivity improved, according to Dr Craig Nossel, current head of Vitality Wellness.

“It is necessary for people to know these facts, not only for awareness but so that people can start talking about it,” he said.

Professor Marjanne Senekal, head of the University of Cape Town’s department of human nutrition, said the outline of the research results indicate that South Africans’ daily routine is not what it should be.

“People think if they have a half-hour work-out it’s enough, but it is not.”

The research suggests that the average South African spends 90% of the day sitting and only exercises for half an hour.

They also eat a lot more fast food than they should.
