Mother City gets new Khoi name

2012-06-27 06:59

The Khoisan community has given Cape Town a new name.

“//Hui !Gaeb”, which is Khoisan for “where the clouds gather”, will soon be emblazoned across a billboard in the city centre following the death of traditional leader and healer Oom Dawid Kruiper earlier this month, the Cape Times has reported.

Tania Kleinhans, of the Institute for the Restoration of Aborigines of SA, said the name was something with which people from any race, group or nation could identify.

She had approached chicken take-away chain Nando’s to sponsor the billboard, and it had agreed.

She said she chose Nando’s because of its controversial television advert released earlier this month.

The advertisement begins with the voice-over: “You know what’s wrong with South Africa? It’s all you foreigners.”

It then shows people of various races and cultures across the country disappearing in puffs of smoke.

Eventually, only a Khoisan man is left, and he declares he is not going anywhere: “You @&*$# [swearword blocked out in advertisement] found us here.”

According to the report, the billboard would go up tomorrow and would include a translation.
