Mother accused of killing her five kids still in custody

The Northern Cape mother accused of killing her five children is still in police custody and will appear in court again next week.

Venolia Siwa (35) appeared in the Pampierstad Magistrates’ Court yesterday, but did not apply for bail, The Star newspaper reported.

She has applied for legal aid and will appear in court again on Monday when she was expected to enter a plea.

Siwa was arrested on Tuesday after the bodies of the five children, aged between two and 13, were found at their home in Lower Majeakgoro Village, Pampierstad.

State prosecutor Lesego Diale told the court the killings were believed to have been premeditated and “well thought out”.

Police spokesperson Captain Cherelle Ehlers earlier said it appeared the children had been drowned but postmortems still needed to be concluded.
