Motlanthe gains more support in Limpopo

2012-05-19 08:00

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is gaining more support in Limpopo, according to a report.

Two of the five regions in the province voted in Motlanthe’s favour during regional elective conferences held in Mopani and Sekhukhune, the Citizen reported today.

The two regions have the most ANC members and branches, making them the biggest in Limpopo, followed by Vhembe, Peter Mokaba and Waterberg.

Chairman of the Vhembe region Philemon Mdaka, who is a supporter of Jacob Zuma, will battle it out against Tshitereke Matidi this weekend at the region’s elective conference.

Matidi, reportedly a Motlanthe supporter, is the mayor and sub-regional chairman of the Mutale municipality.

The newspaper reported that of the 320 delegates at the conference Mdaka had the support of 128. Matidi had 192.

The Peter Mokaba region, the province’s most powerful, will hold its elective conference later this month. The region is currently run by Lawrence Mapoulo, a Motlanthe ally.

He was also former ANC Youth League president and Julius Malema’s political mentor.
