Movie Review – Missing the revolution

2012-08-18 14:40

Johnny’s from the streets, Baby’s a daddy’s girl but dance will bring them together.

I know, that’s the plot of Dirty Dancing – and Footloose too. Step Up Revolution doesn’t stray far from the steps most danced and the leads are a dancer who had a bit part in Fame (Kathryn McCormick) and a guy (Ryan Guzman) who models Calvin Klein underwear.

So don’t see it for the acting either.

In fact, the most famous actor in it is Peter Gallagher, who made his name in 1989’s Sex, Lies and Videotape, and was jilted while he was in a coma in While You Were Sleeping.

All in all, this fourth instalment in the dance flick franchise that foisted Channing Tatum on us, is forgettable in every way – but one.

The dancing is red hot and the 3D gimmick is an annoyance that isn’t necessary to enjoy this crew’s elastic moves.

It’s also the kind of film teen parents will root for – there’s no sex .

Hell, there isn’t even a chaste after-date kiss and the kids are gainfully employed in the business of doing good for their community.

A lot like a Disney film, but without that brand’s knack for catching on to the youth’s zeitgeist.

When all its moves are spent, though, this film lacks the cool factor of its originator, the sexiness of Dirty Dancing’s love story and the rebel yell of Footloose. 5/10
