Movie review – A crash course in the loss of political innocence

2011-12-16 08:04

Film: The Ides of March (Nu Metro)
Director: George Clooney
Featuring: George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti
Rating: 7/10

The ominous warning “beware the Ides of March” was given to Julius Caesar by a soothsayer who had foreseen his death at the hands of those he most trusted. However, in this movie, it refers to the death of political innocence.

George Clooney stars, directs and co-writes this film with his Good Night, and Good Luck pal, Grant Heslov.

Clooney takes a sharp stick and pokes it mercilessly at the corruption-blackened corpse of American politics.

In yet another award-worthy performance, Ryan Gosling plays Stephen Meyers, the hot-shot strategist behind Governor Mike Morris’s presidential campaign. Meyers believes Morris is the political messiah.

Too busy for romance, Stephen lives his job, but is flattered when a young intern (Evan Rachel Wood) bats her eyes at him. He begins an affair with her, unaware of the Pandora’s Box he is opening.

The Ides of March may be an American movie, but it is globally relevant as far as political power is concerned.
