Movie review – A warm, fuzzy holiday stew of sentimentality

2011-12-12 09:57

Film: New Year’s Eve (Nu Metro)
Director: Garry Marshall
Featuring: Josh Duhamel, Hilary Swank, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jon Bon Jovi
Rating: 6/10

New Year’s Eve is one of those ensemble films where many lives miraculously fit together at the end in a warm fuzzy stew of sentimentality.

Garry Marshall, who previously directed Valentine’s Day, knows how to attract everyone who’s anyone in Hollywood.

There are Oscar winners – Robert De Niro, Hilary Swank and Halle Berry. There are child stars – Abigail Breslin and Zac Efron. There are TV favourites – Sarah Jessica Parker, Katherine Heigl and Sofia Vergara.

There are even rappers/actors – Ludacris and Common. Then there’s Jon Bon Jovi, who is knocking gracefully on the door of 50.

Writer Katherine Fugate (Valentine’s Day) is unapologetically soppy about the whole love thing. She incorporates all sorts of characters.

Michelle Pfeiffer is a woman who hasn’t taken a chance in her life and who takes a whole lot of chances on New Year’s Eve.

Josh Duhamel is a playboy who realises the futility of his life, Breslin is in search of her first kiss, De Niro is on his deathbed and Ashton Kutcher is rethinking his attitude to New Year’s after being stuck in a lift with Glee’s Lea Michele.

New Year’s Eve is a perfectly competent holiday flick with absolutely everyone in it.

However, it isn’t going to make it on to the all-time favourites shelf alongside Marshall’s modern classic, Pretty Woman.
