Movie review – Girl meets poor little rich boy

2011-07-22 14:46

The star of Chalet Girl (UIP), Felicity Jones, is more at home in period dress. She has starred in the likes of Northanger Abbey, The Tempest and Brideshead Revisited.

But here she tries on a lot of sarcasm and snowboarding. The effect is not completely awful, but there’s something a little cringeworthy about her pouting provocatively while putting on a tomboy act.

She’s Kim, a working-class girl who used to be a champion skateboarder until her mother’s death. Now she works in a fast food joint trying to keep a roof over her almost catatonic father’s head.

When the final demand letters start arriving, she has to take a job in Austria as a chalet girl. That’s the job of a cook, cleaner and companion to a rich family of ski enthusiasts.

It’s a fish-out-of-water story as all the folk on the slopes are awfully posh, while Kim is sad, in debt and has an accent to top it all.

Of course, she captures the attention of the rich banker’s son, Johnny (Ed Westwick) and exorcises her demons over the death of her mother on a snowboard.

There’s little new here, but teenagers will enjoy the film and think Westwick is dreamy – even though he couldn’t act his way out of a bit part.
