Movie review – Mr Smith and Mr Jones kick more alien butt

2012-05-25 12:19

Film: Men in Black 3 (Ster Kinekor)
Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
Featuring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Alice Eve and Jemaine Clement
Rating: 7/10

Will Smith is an alien – either that or he’s got really good genes because between the first time he stepped out as Agent J in 1997 at the age of 29 and today at age 44, he’s unchanged.

Which is just one of the reasons (eye candy) why folks will flock to this inter-galactic laugh fest, and let’s face it, all of us could do with a good laugh and a little perspective.

This story’s about saving the planet from annihilation, is there any issue bigger?

This third film in the franchise has been a long time coming – the second in the franchise came out 10 years ago.

That kind of gap should be good news, after all it means the writers weren’t bullied and rushed into a sequel to continue milking the cash cow.

The makers couldn’t resist the siren call of 3D however, which yet again neither adds nor subtracts from the content – it just is.

Fans of the technology will be pleased, but for the rest – the 2D will do.

Agent J (Smith) is forced to jump back to the past to save the world when a homicidal extra-terrestrial escapes from a prison on the moon and kills Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones).

The future it creates is alien friendly, which doesn’t suit the Men in Black whose mandate remains to save the earth from the scum of the universe.

The murderous alien in question is played by funnyman Jemaine Clement of TV’s Flight of the Conchords fame, while Emma Thompson is restrained Agent O.

But the real fun and games go on in 1969 – year of the moon landing and other psychedelic stuff, man.

Josh Brolin is a young Agent K and he’s fabulous as the cowboy music-loving, pie-eating, slow-talking, emotionless secret agent.

Alice Eve is a young bodacious Agent O and Smith is, well, Smith – funny, cool and kick-ass.

The franchise also retains its original director Barry Sonnenfeld, which gives it continuity that makes watching it feel like visiting a well-loved if weird friend.

Basically when it comes to who I chose to save the world – Smith is my first choice, he’s good at it (MiB 1, 2 and 3 and don’t forget Independence Day) and he does it with style.
