Movie review – Two men, one woman, and romance

2012-02-24 08:28

This Means War (Nu Metro) is lightweight eye candy for date night. Chris Pine and Tom Hardy are FDR and Tuck, respectively, a pair of CIA assassins with smart suits and smarter mouths.

After they muck up a big job, leaving a dangerous criminal on their trail, they are turned into desk jockeys by their scary boss (played with dominatrix chic by Angela Bassett).

With too much time on their hands they both fall into a little light dating.

As does Lauren (a perky Reese Witherspoon), a workaholic who needs some fun in her life, so her best friend signs her up for internet dating.

It doesn’t take FDR and Tuck long to work out they are dating the same girl, so they decide to make a gentlemen’s agreement – they will let her decide. In no time at all though they are using oodles of taxpayers’ money and CIA equipment to spy on each other and sabotage each other’s efforts to romance the girl.

This really is scriptwriting by numbers for cardboard cutout characters and by 10 minutes in you will have unravelled exactly how it’s going to end.

And, yes, you have seen it all before.

Full of silly stunts and flip comments, this really is the most disposable form of entertainment Hollywood makes, but it is pretty to look at.
