» Award-winning Congolese movie Viva Riva! hits SA
Djo Tunda wa Munga’s feature film Viva Riva! finally opens in South Africa on October 7.

The Congolese director’s gangster thriller won numerous awards including this year’s inaugural MTV Movie Award for Best African Film, six major African Movie Academy Awards and best feature at this year’s Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles.

Shot in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the thriller revolves around a charming small-time thug, Riva, who returns to his energy-starved hometown of Kinshasa after stealing a truckload of fuel from an Angolan crime lord.

His bounty is worth a fortune in the city which has run out of petrol. The film delves into the world of young smugglers working the Angola-Kinshasa trade – men who care little about tomorrow.

This is the first film shot in the DRC in 25 years.

» Another Spielberg epic
DreamWorks Studios and 20th Century Fox will co-finance the epic sci-fi movie Robopocalypse, to be directed by Steven Spielberg.

The announcement was recently made by the two studios, who plan to release the film worldwide on July 3 2013.
Robopocalypse explores the fate of the human race following a robot uprising.

It has been adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard and is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Daniel H Wilson.

» Howl makes its debut at Out in Africa
Catch Oscar-nominated star James Franco (Milk, 127 Hours, Rise of Planet of the Apes) as beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the acclaimed biopic, Howl, on the opening night at this year’s third (and final edition) of Out in Africa (OIA), South Africa’s gay and lesbian film festival.

The movie is directed by legendary documentary filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, who have two Oscars, three Peabodies and multiple Emmy Awards between them.

OIA runs from October 21 to October 30 at Nu Metro Hyde Park in Joburg and at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

» Triple dose of laughter from local comedians

Get some laughs from Triple O, a comedy show shot during the Comedy Festival at Bassline in Newtown, Joburg, to a sold-out audience. This hilarious DVD features funny men Thomas Gumede and Tall Ass Mo.

The show takes audiences on a hilarious journey with four comedians before, during and after their live, one-night,
stand-up comedy shows. The best part is the originality of the jokes.
