Mpumalanga cop seriously wounded

2011-06-06 09:00

A police officer shot and wounded in Pienaar over the weekend is in serious condition in hospital, Mpumalanga police said today.

The officer and an inspector were tipped off that a murder suspect would be at a tavern in Pienaar on Saturday, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

They found a shoot-out between two men inside the tavern.

One of the men saw the officers, who were not dressed in police uniforms, and shot the reserve officer in the stomach before climbing on top of him and throttling him, Hlathi said.

“When the other officer tried to intervene he was also shot and wounded in the hand and the suspect tried to run away.

“The second officer who was shot in the hand managed to shoot the suspect in the leg, leading to his arrest,” Hlathi said.

The other man involved in the shoot-out escaped.

The officer who was wounded in the hand was treated and discharged from hospital while the reserve was kept under hospital care in a serious, but stable condition.

The wounded suspect was also hospitalised. He was expected to face two counts of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm once released from hospital.
