Mulaudzi out of world champs

2011-08-17 14:19

World 800m world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi has withdrawn from the IAAF World Athletics Championships.

Mulaudzi, who won gold at the Berlin championships in 2009, has injured his hamstring and therefore won’t be fit in time to defend his title at the event that starts in Daegu, South Korea, on August 27.

The 30-year-old Central Gauteng runner told City Press that he pulled his hamstring on Monday and would not be ready to line up in his favourite discipline at the Asian showpiece.

“I am not going to be fit and I just decided today (Wednesday) that I can’t do anything because of the pain,” said a dejected Mulaudzi.

“There is nothing I can do now except to accept my fate while I heal.”

This is the first time Mulaudzi will miss a major event since he made his world championship debut in Edmonton, Canada, in 2001.

The man known as the “Bullet” had otherwise started the current season on the back foot having just recovered from an Achilles Tendon strain.

The injury kept him out of the domestic Yellow Pages track-and-field series between February and April.

Mulaudzi had only competed in three international events prior to his latest setback.

He came second in the Golden Gala and the Adidas Grand Prix meets in the IAAF Diamond League series.

He is currently rated a distant 46th in the IAAF top lists and his season’s best was the 1:45.50 he ran at the Golden Gala in Italy on May 26.

His last competitive race was during the Athletissima meeting in Switzerland on June 30.
