Ganyani’s House Grooves 7

(Soul Candi)DJ GanyaniAfter the fast-paced Ganyani’s House Grooves 6, the smooth vocal house of Grooves 7 will be refreshing for followers of the DJ Ganyani.

The opening track is inviting, thanks to the amazing vocals of Samantha James.

But after such a scorching opening tune, I felt cheated by the track selection.

I skipped through some songs. However, tracks such as Hey Hey by Dennis Ferrer and Hard Time For Lovers by Rocco are bona fide club anthems.

The CD also features compilations by Choklate, DJ Gregory and Gregor Salto.

Gospel Greats (EMI) Various

Despite the dazzling array of America’s gospel A-listers, I suggest you start with Disc 2 and skip the gradual build-up to the divine crescendo.

Patience is a virtue, but some of us want instant gratification.

Sheri Jones-Moffett’s Renewed is pacey, Ricky Dillard & New G’s The Light provides foot-stamping beats, and Giants by Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers makes you want to throw your hands in the air and sing praises.

Disc 1 will help wind things down with CeCe Winans, Darwin Hobbs and Kierra Sheard, among others.

6/10 – Babalwa Shota

Look to the Edge (Sony) Louise Carver

This album, which has an edgy electronic/pop sound with infusions of South African rhythms and percussion, will appeal to South African and global audiences alike.

Warrior, for example, features rapper Zulu Boy, who takes the song to a new level.

The smooth and catchy Honey, It’s Time To Go tells of a one-night stand that took a turn for the worse, while the more serene These Days comments on how convoluted relationships can be.

This 12-track album is unique and diverse.

It’s easy listening and has something for everyone.

8/10 – Boitumelo Mofubetsoana
