Housebound by RJ Benjamin

Singer and songwriter RJ Benjamin sticks to his roots and influences as an artist on the album House Bound.

He keeps the instrumentation simple without losing the influences of soul jazz and funk.

Among the featured artists is rapper Slikour – on the remake of Change The World – and Danny K.

House DJ and producer Dr Duda is on the beautiful track Into The Stars.

The album is a prelude to the soulified Housebound 2, which will be released later this year.

This album will be great for those lounge settings.

Thank Me Later by Drake

It’s been a while since a rapper came onto the scene out of nowhere and had any significant impact on the genre.

Jay Z, Tupac, Biggie, and more recently Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne were the it-boys of the game and now it seems that Drake is the latest to join the elite list.

The album, Thank Me Later, is a cool mix of R&B and hip-hop, and features some interesting collaborations.

Fireworks featuring Alicia Keys is a sure hit, while Find Your Love is enjoying chart success. The title track, Thank Me Later, will be another chart topper.

8/10 – Farrah Francis

Poison by Don Laka

Don Laka’s latest album fails to capture the morbid themes he promises by naming this project Poison. This is a generally friendly outing for the master keyboardist.

The best of the tracks is Acid Rain. It’s perhaps the most imaginative of the performances on the album. Here the band comes alive, with the piano attempting a commendable improvised solo, though the applause must go to the saxophone for a daring improvisation.

The Acid Rain performance makes this a jazz album, saving it from the clutches of petty politeness that Laka calls kwaai-jazz.

4/10 – Percy Mabandu
