Artist: FKA Twigs

Album: LP1

Rating: 4/5

This is not a pop album. Not yet, anyway. Pop is generally born from the streets and the underground, from an anti-pop place. So call this future pop. FKA Twigs is not scared to experiment and annoy radio-friendly ears. But there’s a lush, gorgeous hook to the work. There’s a shudder of post-millennial tension exhaled as splinters of (lyrically average) vocals linger over broken down beats in a place where sex meets the dark. The British project begun by Kate Bush and breaking into a wave of Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky et al has a new poster girl. – Charl Blignaut

Rating: 2/5

FKA Twigs doesn’t make music, guys; she makes Art, with a capital A. Look, I appreciate her unique aesthetic and boldness to appear in music videos strapped to the ceiling by her braids, but her whispery, sparse sound makes me feel like I’ve been abandoned in a cold, dark cave. Ms Twigs is everything that irks me about experimental music – it takes itself way too seriously and it’s almost intentionally inaccessible. I am all for artists pushing the envelope (Pe† Ceme†ery comes to mind), but they should remember their listeners, too. – Grethe Koen

Rating: 3/5

When FKA Twigs’ Water Me video was released in 2013, it felt as though my questions about life had been answered. The day of its release, I listened to it nine times in a row. I was sure this creature from another planet had, in fact, come down to save the world from boredom with her ethereal synthesis of musical and visual genres. With this new LP, my heart breaks, maybe because I expected so much from it. Either way, our Twigs must recognise that the edge is a tough place to reside artistically and the moment she falls off it, her fans will too. – Garreth van Niekerk
