Music lovers flock to Macufe

This year’s Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) has registered record ticket sales.

The biggest drawcard for the R40 million annual festival was the main music event on Friday.

A record 17 000 tickets were sold for the show, which featured American crooner Johnny Gill and his gospel-singer compatriot Bebe Winans, Afro soul singer Thandiswa Mazwai, and Motswako rap star HHP.

Free State department of sports, arts and culture festival director, Mario Sefo, said the R250-a-head tickets were sold out. People even flocked to their offices on Friday to secure the tickets.

Sefo said local hotels and guesthouses were fully booked.

Several Bloemfontein hotels contacted by City Press attested to that.

And some people who had secured tickets for the main event had no choice but to stay in Kimberley, about 180km outside Bloemfontein.

The Divas concert – featuring Mazwai and Zimbabwean Chiwoniso Maraire – was sold out.

The turnout was in stark contrast to last Sunday’s gospel show, whose attendance was poor.

But Sefo attributed the poor turnout to organisers opting to stage the show outdoors.

“I think we should consider having it indoors next time,” said Sefo.
