Soon we may finally know what Thembi Seete was saying in her iconic rap verse from Boom Shaka’s It’s About Time, thanks to

Started by North West-born, Gauteng-raised former Voice of Wits  radio presenter Neo Rathebe and a committed and enthusiastic team of individuals, the website is a fast-growing, one-stop database of artist information.

Rathebe says while hosting a 100% local music radio show where listeners could call in to complete the lyrics to a song, he noticed most did not know the words or just made them up.

He also noticed there was little information online to satisfy the need for local artist biographies and lyrics.

And so Bimba (to sing badly or incorrectly) was born on June 16 this year.

The website has grown from its initial 1?000 songs. Rathebe says about 25 songs a day are put up and undergo a verification process that involves sending them to artists or their management for verification and correction.

Although some artists are not responsive, he says others like Liquideep and Okmalumkoolkat have helped with checking and correcting lyrics.

The website features everyone from AKA, Bok van Blerk and Thebe to Van Coke Kartel. Rathebe says: “We admire the lyrics and we bimba along. Bimba is intended to be a dignified space for local artists and their work.”
