My World Cup Moment: Making noise in the Vaal

2010-06-14 11:39

June 11 might as well have been a public holiday.

The vibe in the Johannesburg CBD was electric. Traffic was crazy

but nobody seemed to complain (except taxi passengers who were told by an irate

driver that he was not going deeper into town because of traffic – they would

have to walk).

Hooters, vuvuzelas and yellow and green took over Jozi. The Vaal,

however, was something else.
World Cup fever did not flood the area with the

same tenacity as did the city of gold.

There were random groups dressed in yellow and green blowing their

vuvuzelas. But they were only in key areas such as at taxi ranks, fanparks and

shebeens.

Compared with Jozi, where silence was but a dream, Vanderbijlpark

was peaceful.

My World Cup moment – both sweet and sour – was when Simphiwe

Shabalala scored and we screamed like deranged patients.

Our neighbours in the complex rushed out, thinking we were in

danger. But for once, I cared less as I blew my vuvuzela so hard, bringing life

to the quiet complex.
