Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, the leader of the National Freedom Party (NFP), will be stepping down as Zululand District Municipality’s mayor after 15 years at the helm.

NFP party secretary Nhlanhla Khubisa said yesterday that kaMagwaza-Msibi would be leading the party in Parliament when it convenes on May 21.

The NFP garnered six seats in the national assembly after the May 7 general election.

“She is taking a seat in Parliament. As the face of the party during the election [campaign], she must lead it in Parliament,” he said.

He said that kaMagwaza-Msibi had been a councillor for 19 years, 15 of which she served as mayor of the Zululand District Municipality.

The NFP was formed three months before the May 2011 local government elections, when kaMagwaza-Msibi, who was the chairperson of the Inkatha Freedom Party, broke away.
