NHI ‘a social mobilisation policy’

2011-09-02 10:54

Africans needed to look at the National Health Insurance (NHI) as a “social mobilisation policy”, health department director-general Malebona Matsoso said during a summit in Durban today.

“We need to look at the NHI with fresh eyes. To me, it is a social call to all of us to change and rebuild our social structure.”

The NHI was aimed at providing improved access to quality health services to all South Africans, and would be phased in over 14 years.

“In 50 years’ time, we must be able to look back with pride at the achievement we would have made in achieving universal access to healthcare in the country.”

A healthier population contributed to better wealth creation, she said.

“When NHI was implemented in Canada between 1961 and 1975, employment rose and wages were increased.”
