NUM appeals for calm after ‘execution-style’ killing of Lonmin shop steward

2013-10-18 09:14

The National Union of Mineworkers has appealed for calm among its members after another union leader at Lonmin’s volatile platinum mine was shot “execution-style” last night.

The name of the chairperson of Lonmin’s Western shaft is yet to be released, but it has emerged the victim was shot at around 9pm near the notorious Wonderkop Stadium.

NUM spokesperson Lesiba Sehoka said the shop steward was with another union member who escaped death, but was shot in the leg.

“We are appealing to everyone, including our members, to remain calm and let the police do their jobs and investigate,” said Seshoka.

The latest killing brings to 13 the number of people killed since last year’s Marikana massacre.

The latest killing also brings to nine the number of unionists killed over the past year, believed to be linked to the fight between the NUM and the rival Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).

Police were still combing the area this morning for clues.

Seshoka said they were confident that an arrest will be made.
