NUM workers informed of Eskom strike interdict

2010-05-26 07:18

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) informed its workers last

night of a court interdict against strike action planned for today. However, the

union is not sure if the information has reached all workers.

“We are communicating to our workers that we have been interdicted

and we cannot really go against it,” said NUM spokesman Shane Choshane.

“But given the fact that the court order was given very late last

night, we are not sure if that information has reached everybody... they have

indicated a very strong urge to go on strike.”

Eskom was granted an eleventh-hour court interdict on last night

preventing the NUM workers from going on a national strike.

Choshane said the union would now look at “further engagement” to

resolve outstanding matters.

However, weekend talks with Eskom produced some results, he

said.

The matters that were discussed at the weekend in an attempt to

prevent the strike included the rights of shopstewards and health and safety

regulations.

Choshane said agreements were reached on these issues.

The only outstanding matter was a housing allowance for

workers.

“They want a R5 000 housing allowance added to their benefits,”

said Choshane.

Further talks with Eskom were scheduled to take place today and

tomorrow, which would also include salary negotiations for 2010.
