NW govt promises help to flood victims

2010-02-16 09:45

THE North West Human Settlements MEC Desbo Mohono has promised

families in Taung whose houses were destroyed in recent floods that “urgent”

assistance was on its way.

“It is important that victims are relieved on time because

emergency cannot last for more than six months,” Mohono said in a statement

today after a visit to the affected areas.

Villages most affected in recent floods were Losasaneng, Gataole,

Mmadipelesa, Cokonyane and Manthe. Most of the destroyed homes were mud

houses.

Mohono instructed the Greater Taung local municipality to urgently

complete an audit on the houses that have been damaged.

“The situation of our people in Taung is serious. They need

assistance today, not next week,” the MEC said.

Meanwhile, the national broadcaster, SABC, reported this morning

that heavy storms outside Orkney in the North West damaged several houses during

the night. It added that municipal councillors and the police were on the scene

to assist people whose homes were flattened.
