‘Name and shame child abusers’

2010-11-12 12:19

The Gauteng community safety department wants child abusers “named and shamed” in the wake of a spate of highly publicised alleged rapes of young girls.

“Properly implemented, this campaign could ensure that institutions of learning maintain a register of convicted child and women abusers,” the department said today.

This followed the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl at the Jules High School in Johannesburg and of an 11-year-old girl in Katlehong, east of Johannesburg.

MEC Nonhlanhla Mazibuko called on communities to “act collectively” to stop the “ongoing monstrous barbarity against women and children”.

“As part of enhancing safety of learners at school, Mazibuko called on officials in her department to speed up a name and shame campaign against known and convicted child and women abusers.”

She called on the judiciary to mete out lengthy jail terms.
