Nehawu declares university strike over, classes to resume

2013-09-06 10:44

The National Education, Health and allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) has declared the strike at the Walter Sisulu University over.

The six-week protest by Nehawu members ended with an agreement that would “see workers receive a 5% annual increase backdated to January 1”, the union said in a statement today.

Nehawu-affiliated workers were expected to return to work on Monday and classes to resume.

The deal included, among others, that an audit firm would be appointed to conduct a further audit on the process of migration into new salary scales. Any errors found with the initial process would be dealt with retrospectively.

“It was also agreed that a once-off opportunity to migrate to a preferred retirement fund will be accorded to members of staff and that presentations will be done to enable staff to make an informed choice,” Nehawu said.

University spokesperson Angela Church could not immediately comment, saying management had not been officially informed.
