New boss for Telkom Business Mobile

2012-07-21 08:55

The newly appointed head of Telkom Business Mobile, Deon Liebenberg, is no stranger to the telecoms industry.

He boasts 18 years of experience under his belt.

He resigned from cellphone company Samsung South Africa, effective July 15.

The very next day, he was officially appointed at Telkom Business Mobile.

His previous role at Samsung South Africa as managing director was to identify opportunities to optimise growth.

George Ferreira, the chief operations officer of Samsung Africa, had said of Liebenberg’s appointment at the time: “Deon’s appointment is in line with Samsung’s commitment to grow and invest in resources in the African market to achieve our business’s growth objectives.”

This week Samsung refused to answer questions by interview, but responded through its head of human resources, Robert Chang Won Lee.

He said: “I do not understand why we have to give you the answer to those questions.”

However, Liebenberg said: “Having spent the last year supporting Samsung’s substantial brand growth in the local market, I have decided that the time has come to move on.”

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of the Free State, an Honours degree in business administration and an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch.

Liebenberg said: “Samsung Electronics South Africa has a very strong and capable team.

“Over the past 12 months, we have achieved the milestones I was originally tasked with: ensuring Samsung South Africa is a brand synonymous with innovation.”

Telkom has welcomed Liebenberg’s appointment and has called him an “industry veteran”.

His history in the telecoms sector stems from heading the sales division at Vodacom.

He has also fulfilled the role as the country’s sales director at Motorola and Research In
Motion, where he was the managing director.

In his new role as head of Telkom Business Mobile, Liebenberg will be responsible for driving strategy and execution for all mobile activities.

Telkom Business’ managing director, Dr Brian Armstrong, said: “We welcome Deon to Telkom and wish him all the best in managing his new challenging assignment.

“I have no doubt in my mind that his vast knowledge and experience will greatly benefit Telkom and Telkom Business.”

Liebenberg was not available for comment on his plans for the mobile unit.

He has a standing history with Telkom, as he began his early sales career there 18 years ago as a corporate account manager.
