New metro police chief appointed

2013-06-22 12:48

Brigadier Zwelibanzi Nyanda has been appointed as the new chief of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).

Nyanda’s appointment was approved by the city council this week, the Saturday Star newspaper reported.

He is a former head of the SA Police Service crime intelligence’s operational response and border policing units.

Nyanda takes over from current chief Chris Ngcobo in August.

Ngcobo had been at the helm of JMPD for more than a decade when his term expired in June 2011. He was then asked to remain in his position while the city searched for a suitable replacement candidate.

The council recommended that Nyanda be appointed on a fixed four-year contract, subject to his meeting all requirements as per municipal regulations.
