Newly appointed North West MEC resigns

The ink has barely dried on the documents confirming Ontlametse Mochware’s appointment as North West social development MEC – and now she’s resigned.

Mochware resigned as mayor of the poor, rural Kagisano Molopo local municipality in Ruth Mompati district when she joined the legislature.

Shortly after her swearing-in, the legislature said she had been brought in to replace former premier Thandi Modise who has been appointed chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

The ANC admitted today that it had overlooked some rules when new Premier Supra Mahumapelo appointed Mochware as MEC.

To remedy this, the ANC asked Mochware to resign voluntarily to avoid “possible litigation”.

Mochware’s name did not appear on the ANC North West’s provincial list of 33.

ANC spokesperson in the North West, Oupa Matla, said they had decided to replace Modise, who was number five on the province’s list, with Mochware.

“[Modise] was appointed to chair the NCOP and we had to replace her, but in terms of Electoral Act, we can only replenish lists after a year,” Matla said.

The party said: “The ANC in the North West Province has received a voluntary resignation from its deployed member of the provincial legislature, OR Mochware. This happened as a consequence of a legal technicality to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“The ANC heartily thanks the comrade for acting in an exemplary manner as a disciplined cadre to save the ANC from possible litigation.”

Mahumapelo has not yet appointed a replacement MEC, but sources in the provincial government said that number 23 on the list, Fenny Gaolaolwe, was the likely candidate.
