Niehaus’s landlord still not paid

2012-05-11 08:50

Former ANC spokesperson Carl Niehaus still has not paid a former landlord rental arrears for a house in Midrand.

Eric Corbishley claims Niehaus owes him R344 108 in rental arrears, plus interest. He has also failed to comply with several default judgments against him.

Corbishley’s attorney Jannie Coetzee said after several broken promises to settle arrears, his client had been forced to get an eviction order and a default judgment in 2009.

“We heard nothing from him for months. He just disappeared without a forwarding physical [or] e-mail address, and he did not answer his phone,” said Coetzee.

Broke and blacklisted three years ago, Niehaus resigned from the ANC in the wake of the scandal. He said he had been overwhelmed by ANC business and blamed his travels with President Jacob Zuma and disarray in the party for his failure to repay his debts.

Corbishley said he was stunned to hear in a recent radio interview that Niehaus had settled all his debts, estimated at R4.5 million.

These included R700 000 he owed Rhema church and R24 000 he owed then director-general in the presidency Frank Chikane.
