Nigeria need to hold Ghana’s lethal Gyan at bay

2010-01-27 10:42

A GLANCE at two key players in Thursday’s Africa Cup of Nations

semi-final – Ghana striker: Asamoah Gyan; and Nigeria defender: Danny

Shittu

Asamoah Gyan

The Ghana striker bagged the first goal of the 2008 Africa Cup of

Nations, and the fastest goal of the 2006 world Cup finals, a 68-second effort

against the Czech Republic.

His first half strike in Sunday’s quarter-final knocked out hosts

Angola and lifted the Black Stars into the semi-final.

He is one of the danger men Nigeria will have to silence on

Thursday. Born three years after his country last won the title, he joined

Rennes from Serie A side Udinese in 2008.

Danny Shittu

With Everton defender Joseph Yobo and Nice back Onyekachi Apam

suspended, Danny Shittu will be largely responsible for holding Ghana’s attack

at bay.

The Lagos-born international joined English Premier League side

Bolton from Watford in 2008 after spells with Charlton, Blackpool and Queen Park

Rangers.

Renowned for the physical presence he gives the Super Eeagles’

defence, he was born in Lagos on September 2, 1980, months after the first of

Nigeria’s two titles.

He missed Nigeria’s opening loss to champions Egypt but has been a

permanent fixture since.
