Nike SA rescues Soweto Marathon

2014-07-29 18:29

Nike SA has announced that they have entered into a partnership with the Soweto Marathon as the iconic race’s title sponsor.

The sponsorship comes a month after a new Athletics SA (ASA) board was elected.

The latest development is a great relief for road runners after the Soweto Marathon failed to take off last year due to ASA politics and a lack of sponsorship.

The competition will take place on November 2 and offers three events – the 10km, 21km and 42km races.

The winning man and woman in the full marathon will get a R100 000 first prize while the half marathon winner will bag R10 000 and the 10km winner gets R5 000.

Speaking at the announcement at the Walter Sisulu Square in Soweto today, ASA president Aleck Skhosana said: “I can’t give credit to myself but to everyone in athletics for listening when I said the war (among the athletics leaders) must come to an end. The sponsors want to be associated with organisations where there is peace, stability and progression.”

Central Gauteng Athletics and the Soweto Marathon Trust, which represent the local clubs, will organise the race, with ASA still playing a part as the mother federation.

“We don’t want money from the race – the Marathon must be self sufficient,” said Skhosana.
