Nine dead in blasts in Russia

A SUICIDE bomber detonated one of two blasts which killed nine

people today in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan, police


“There are nine dead” after the explosions in the Dagestani town of

Kizlyar a local police spokesperson said, adding that most of the victims were

believed to be policemen.

The Interfax news agency said one of the victims was the local

police chief Vitaly Vedernikov.

It quoted an interior ministry official as saying the second

explosion was set off by a suicide bomber dressed in police uniform.

The blasts came two days after female suicide bombers killed 39 in

attacks on the Moscow metro. Authorities linked the incident to militants from

the North Caucasus.
