Nkandla: ‘Voters have only one option ... ’

2014-03-21 09:38

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s findings on President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead shows that the ANC-led government cannot be trusted, the National Freedom Party (NFP) has said.

“The voters have only one option, and that is to vote the ANC-led government out,” said NFP secretary-general Professor Nhlanhla Khubisa today.

“His excellency ... President Jacob Zuma has got to give answers to the South African populace. He has got to apologise in Parliament openly.”

Madonsela found that Zuma and his family had unduly benefited from security upgrades at Nkandla. The upgrades included the establishment of a visitors’ centre, a cattle kraal, a chicken coup, a swimming pool and an amphitheatre.

By the time Madonsela had concluded her investigation, R215 million had been spent. The total cost to complete the project was conservatively put at R246 million.

Madonsela recommended that Zuma pay back a percentage of the cost of upgrades not related to security.

Khubisa today said this would be the honourable thing for Zuma to do.

“As the NFP, we are ready to govern this country because the ANC-led government has betrayed South Africans,” he said.
