No London plans for Oscar

2013-04-17 17:43

Murder-accused paralympian Oscar Pistorius has no plans to compete internationally at this point, his agent, Peet van Zyl, has said.

“There were never any plans for Oscar to participate in London. The fact of the matter is that Oscar has been withdrawn from all international competitions at this point,” he said in a statement today.

“He is not training officially and there are no plans, at this point, for him to resume his international career.”

Van Zyl was responding to reports that Pistorius had not been invited to the Anniversary Games at London’s Olympic Park in July this year.

The three-day event to commemorate the first anniversary of the London Olympics will include a day of Paralympic sport, UK Athletics said.

Chairman Ed Warner said Pistorius would not be invited to take part.

“I don’t want to see the Sunday of the Anniversary Games turning into a media circus,” Warner told BBC radio.

“It would over-shadow every other athlete that was there. It’s not about innocent or guilty; it’s about how you handle an individual with a difficult moral situation hanging over them.”

Van Zyl said the decision not to invite Pistorius did not come as a surprise to them.

“His [Pistorius’s] focus, at this point, remains preparing for and dealing with the legal process in South Africa,” Van Zyl said.

Pistorius was charged with murder after his girlfriend, law graduate and model Reeva Steenkamp, was shot dead in his Pretoria home on February 14.

Pistorius was released on bail on February 22 under conditions which included a ban on international travel.

He successfully challenged the conditions in the High Court in Pretoria and several were relaxed, including bans on travel and alcohol consumption.
