No blank cheque for Safa – Cape Town

2012-04-13 07:03

The SA Football Association (Safa) will not receive a blank cheque from the City of Cape Town to host the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) next year.

Mayoral committee member for tourism and marketing Grant Pascoe said the city was obliged to comply with the requirements of Municipal Finance Management Act and other legislation.

“Safa has sent us a letter to sign the hosting agreement document without addressing the concerns that we had raised with them with regard to the cost.”

He said the city had estimated the cost, based on the document, to be R27 million, possibly rising to R40 million or more.

The city had not received guarantees from the National Treasury as it had hoped, and revenue from the Confederation of African Football and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) was still unknown. The LOC dismissed reports that tournament preparations were in disarray.

LOC CEO Mvuzo Mbebe said they had met with the preferred host cities to iron out certain problems, the SABC reported.

Mbebe said some of the cities did not understand the terms and conditions in the host city agreement.

Rustenburg was reportedly the only city that had signed the agreement.
