No clarity on Oscar’s Australia plans

2013-02-15 09:10

Athletics Australia says it has no information as to how Oscar Pistorius’s arrest following the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, will affect the 26-year-old’s plans to run Down Under next month.

The Blade Runner was confirmed to race at the Sydney and Perth meetings of the 2013 Qantas Australian Athletics Tour on March 9 and 16 respectively.

Pistorius was arrested yesterday in connection with the shooting at the sprinter’s plush home in Pretoria.

The Paralympic star will appear in court today.

These developments have cast doubt on Pistorius’s planned tour of Australia where he was to be a headline act in the 400m.

Athletics Australia’s official website quoted chief executive officer Dallas O’Brien saying they were aware of the “tragic news story developing in South Africa around Pistorius”.

“Clearly, all the details around this incident are still coming to light, and for this reason we have no information at this time about how this effects Oscar’s plans,” O’Brien told athletics.com.au.

Attempts to get comment from Pistorius’s agent, Peet van Zyl, were unsuccessful as his phone was constantly on voicemail.
