No excuses – Khune

2013-03-22 15:06

Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune believes he has earned the captain’s armband on merit.

Khune, who will captain the team in the absence of Bongani Khumalo, said he would not let his guard down and would continue doing well for the national team.

Khumalo was dropped from the team to play the Central African Republic (CAR) at the Cape Town Stadium tomorrow night.

But the modest Khune said there were many leaders who were capable of leading the team.

“For me, it won’t change anything and I will keep on giving my all for the national team. It’s an honour and privileged to lead a team in such a crucial game and I am looking forward to the challenge,” said Khune, after Bafana’s final training session at Athlone Stadium before tomorrow’s crucial World Cup qualifier.

Although he would be playing with the new back four in the absence of injured Siyabonga Sangweni and Tsepo Masilela and Khumalo, Khune stressed the importance of communication as the key to getting things right.

“I believe it will go down to how we communicate with each other because we have never played together before but nothing beats communication. It is also about respecting each other and from what I have seen at training this week, it looks good and we should not have a problem.”

He said they were happy with the condition of the pitch as it would suit their style of play.

“We should not have excuses because the pitch looks great and it is perfect for our brand of football. We are hoping for the best.”
