‘No-fee’ school expels pupil for not paying fees

2014-11-03 11:58

The Gauteng education department today began an investigation into an apparent no-fee school in Olievenhoutbosch, near Centurion, that allegedly expelled a pupil for not paying school fees.

“We will be sending someone from the district office to the school today to go and investigate,” department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said.

“The official will investigate and provide a report, and we will act on the report.”

Sekhonyane could not confirm a report that the Walter Sisulu Primary School was a no-fee school. She said this would be established during the investigation.

The Sowetan newspaper today reported that a six-year-old girl was expelled from the school because her mother could not afford to pay the fees. The Grade R pupil has been at home for two months.

“I pleaded with the principal ... but he mercilessly showed my daughter and I the gate,” the girl’s mother was quoted as saying.

Principal Garos Kabinde declined to comment on the report and referred queries to the department.
