No happy ending here

2009-09-12 12:35

THE sorry saga surrounding Caster Semenya leaves a bitter-sweet taste in the mouth. It is a story that has no happy ending.

And the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) must not be allowed to get away with the humiliation and inhumane way in which they have handled this delicate matter.

If there were questions about her sex, they could have been asked in a more dignified, humane and confidential manner.

But the fact that the testing was done clandestinely and then leaked by someone obviously inside the IAAF shows there are hidden motives.

The results of the tests have also been leaked, showing a consistent and deliberate attempt to further damage her reputation, dignity and career.

As a poor young woman who was to use her talent to leave behind the poverty of her village, she now has to spend the rest of her life dealing with this controversy.

We hope that Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile, who has been absent from the matter all along and should earlier have shown his hand – and that of our government – will get the answers that we seek from the IAAF.

Semenya is human and has feelings. She has family, she has friends and she belongs to us. She is one of our own. They touch her, they touch all of us.
