Life may not be fair, but perseverance pays off in the end

In response to Mantena Ngoasheng’s article, “I have a degree. I can’t find a job” (City Press, September 21 2013), I have a son with three degrees who could not get a job he believed he deserved until the black consciousness and apartheid-toughened pride in me screamed at him: “If you went to university, burnt the midnight oil, had no girlfriend, wore clothing from Jet, denied yourself youthful pleasures and then expected some white boy (who probably doesn’t have your academic qualifications) to give you a cushy job after you graduated, you are either deceived, not living in the real world or are just plain bloody dumb!”

Naturally my son was very angry with me. I was the one who had pushed him hard to get a good education and had given him the impression that a nice job would be waiting for him when he graduated.

But being the son of a political activist, he ultimately got the message and started an IT consultancy.

He bailed himself out of the “heads I win, tails you lose” situation of qualifications but no experience, experience but no qualifications by giving himself experience.

Mantena, we sacrificed to send you to a school, technicon or university to become a job creator and not a perpetual jobseeker.

Life is not fair – get used to it! But never give up, because luck tends to favour those who do things for themselves.

It is bad to be exploited, brother, but it is worse not to do anything.

If you don’t believe me, ask that Zimbabwean with a master’s degree who was initially a waiter at a Sandton restaurant and now has his own restaurant in Orange Grove.

Education doesn’t feed you, you feed yourself with education.
