No meningitis outbreak: state

2010-12-06 15:03

There was no meningitis outbreak in Gauteng, the provincial health department said today.

“The department would like to state that these alarming reports are not accurate. The province does not have an outbreak of meningococcal meningitis,” spokesperson Simon Zwane said.

The New Age newspaper reported today, in its first edition to hit the news stands, that three babies had died of meningitis in three state hospitals in Gauteng.

“The hospitals referred to in the reports, Far East Rand, Tambo Memorial and Mamelodi have no record of persons diagnosed with meningitis in the past week,” said Zwane.

“A positive diagnosis of meningococcal meningitis can only be confirmed by a laboratory test done by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.

“The institute reports these cases to the department and necessary steps are taken if there is a sign of an outbreak. So far, the institute has not reported an outbreak of meningitis in the province.”

Meningococcal meningitis is a communicable disease transmitted through droplets of respiratory or throat secretions, as well as close or prolonged contact such as kissing, sneezing and coughing on someone.?
