No paddling for Juju – only politics

2010-11-17 15:28

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema won’t paddle in next year’s Unlimited Dusi since the league “does not entertain things that do not relate to its political programme”.

World class paddler Oscar Chalupsky invited Malema to do the gruelling three-day Dusi in February 2011.

“I phoned him this morning to tell him I wanted to do the Dusi with him,” he said.

Chalupsky had wanted the Youth League president to join him and his brother, Herman, for a triple.

The paddler has in the past taken celebrities like Jacob “Baby Jake” Matlala and Doctor Khumalo on the canoeing experience. He wanted to take Malema “down the river to mark the 60th anniversary of the event in 2011”.

The league’s spokesperson, Floyd Shivambu, said he did not know anything about the invitation. He said: “It’s a publicity-seeking stunt, which we’ll never dignify.”

Shivambu said the league does not entertain things that do not relate to “our political programme”.

Chalupsky learnt from City Press that Malema would not be joining him. “It is a pity he doesn’t want to paddle,” he said.

» The three-day 120 kilometre canoe marathon is attended by 2 500 paddlers who paddle for four to five hours a day. It will take place from February 17 to 19 from Pietermaritzburg to Durban through the Valley of a Thousand Hills.
