No word on SA victims in DRC plane crash

2011-07-09 15:01

There was no word yet on whether any South Africans were killed in a plane crash in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the department of international relations said today.

“We are still awaiting a report from our mission in that country,” said spokesman Clayson Monyela.

A plane carrying 112 passengers crashed due to bad weather in eastern DRC yesterday, French news agency, AFP, reported.

The plane was operated by Hewa Bora Airways and reportedly crashed at Kisangani Airport in the northeast of the country.

It was on regular commercial route from the capital Kinshasa to Kisangani and Goma when it was hit by the storm as it approached the airport, the report said.

Today, AFP reported that the death toll stood at 74.
