Nomuzi Mabena - Treasure hunter

2012-11-27 14:08

As a committed vintage junkie, Nomuzi says her wardrobe is influenced by street wear and fashion blogs rather than what’s hot in the movies or what Kim Kardashian wore.

‘There’s an African element to my style, whether it’s a piece of jewellery, a scarf or a turban,’ she says.

‘I don’t like looking like everyone else. I like my clothes to look like me – different.’

Nomuzi says the most wonderful aspect of her new job is that she’s been given an opportunity to live her dream.

‘I’m very grateful for that, and I understand that being new in the industry means I have to be open to learning. I’ve learnt to be quiet and listen, even though I have sparkling ideas.’

The vibrant presenter adds that everyone has been welcoming and accommodating.

‘But you’ve got to be humble if you want to succeed in this industry,’ she believes.

When it comes to her passion for vintage, she loves finding unique pieces at her favourite shopping spot in Noord Street, downtown Johannesburg.

‘It’s not just about buying beautiful stuff,’ she says.

‘It’s about interacting with the people at the boutique. There’s an element of ubuntu that you don’t find at a mall in the middle of Sandton. Plus, there’s always a story behind the clothes. When you wear them, they create a new story with you.’

Nomuzi’s treasure quests aren’t confined to shops and boutiques.

‘My aunt passed away recently and I had an opportunity of going into her closet where I found leather shorts.

I also love the feeling of being able to wear clothes my mom wore.’

My signature style piece is…

‘I’m aways in heels. I only own one pair of flat shoes.’
