Nomvethe rakes in PSL awards

2012-05-28 07:31

Moroka Swallows striker Siyabonga Nomvethe scooped the country’s top awards at the 2011/12 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season-end function.

The rejuvenated 34-year-old was crowned PSL Footballer of the Year, while also earning the league’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year accolades at the function at Gold Reef City last night.

This is the second time that Nomvethe has earned the two awards, having collected the same gongs in the 1999/2000 season.

The Birds’ frontman also won the Premiership’s top scorer award with 20 goals in the league, where his side finished second behind Orlando Pirates in the tightly-contested title race.

Nomvethe, who has forced his way back into the Bafana Bafana fold, pocketed R600 000 in prize money on the evening.

In other categories, Swallows’ coach Gordon Igesund walked away with the Coach of the Season award, while Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper Wayne Sandilands was named Goalkeeper of the Year.

SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams earned the Red Hot Young Player award.

Veteran Pirates striker Benni McCarthy earned the league sponsor’s Absa-lutely Awesome Goal of the Season, while also claiming the Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament award.

His teammate, Oupa Manyisa, was named the MTN8 Player of the Tournament – one of the three trophies that Pirates won this season.

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Nyasha Mushekwi was named the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament, where his side lost to SuperSport in the final on Saturday.

SuperSport’s Thabiso Nkoana earned the trophy’s Young Player award.

“We salute all our players this evening,” PSL chief executive, Stan Matthews, said.

“It’s been a tough season and we need to recognise the achievements of the players, and the PSL Awards does just that.

“Congratulations to all the winners and nominees.”
