Northam strike will continue – NUM

2010-09-27 15:30

A wage strike at Northam Platinum mine in Limpopo would continue, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said today.

“The reality of the matter is the strike is going to continue,” said union spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka.

More than 8 000 workers entered their fourth week of strike action at the Zondereinde mine near Thabazimbi, after negotiations at a CCMA meeting failed last week.

Issues concerning a basic salary increase and an increase in the living-out allowance were tabled, but no agreement was reached.

The monthly living-out allowance was increased from R1 600 to R1 750, but the union rejected this. It is demanding R3 500.

The union lowered its initial 15% salary increase demand to 12%, which the employer still refused to meet, Seshoka said.

He questioned why the mine was not in a hurry to stop the strike as it claimed it was losing R1 million a day.

“If any company is making that amount of money per day, they can actually (afford the increase).”

Mine spokesperson Marion Brower said: “It would not be appropriate for the company to make any comments at the moment.”
