Northern Cape wants premier by March 1

2013-01-22 16:33

The ANC provincial executive committee (PEC) in the Northern Cape will ask the ANC National Executive Committee for a directive on the appointment of a premier.

Gail Parker, provincial spokesperson, said the PEC decided during its meeting today that “by the time the legislature opens on March 1 the province would have a new premier”.

Northern Cape premier Hazel Jenkins collapsed during her State of the Province address last year.

She was rushed to hospital and was said to have suffered a stroke.

Education MEC Grizelda Cjiekella was subsequently appointed acting premier.

Parker said the PEC felt the State of the Province address should be delivered by a premier and not an acting premier. She said no names of candidates for the premiership were discussed.

In an interview last year after the charging of three PEC members – John Block, Alvin Botes and Yolanda Botha – ANC provincial secretary Zamani Saul said they were strong contenders for the post.

Block, Botha and Botes appeared in court on charges of fraud and corruption and were released on R50 000 bail each.

The case was postponed to March 7.
