Not available on May 18? Apply for a special vote

2011-04-18 14:21

Voters on May 18 will for the first time be able to cast special votes in a local government election, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said today.

The application process for special votes for the May 18 elections opened on Friday and will run until Wednesday, May 3, at 5pm.

“If you are a South African citizen, 18 years and older and your name appears on the voters’ roll but you cannot vote on election day at the voting station in the voting district where you have been registered, you qualify for a special vote.

“You have to apply for a special vote in person at your local municipal electoral officer or someone else can also submit your application on your behalf.”

Those applicants who could not vote on May 18 would cast their special votes on Monday, May 16 between 8am and 5pm at the voting station in the voting district where they were registered.

Those who were physically infirm or disabled would be visited by IEC staff on May 16 or 17 at home.

“Please remember that you have to vote in the voting district where you are registered.”

The required MEC1 form (Appendix 25) was available from municipal electoral offices countrywide or on the IEC website at www.elections.org.za.

For more information call the IEC tollfree on 0800 11 8000.
