Nunes fired up for Bafana

2012-10-10 13:29

All eyes were on new Bafana Bafana defender Ricardo Nunes on his first training session with the team ahead of their friendly against Poland on Friday.

Nunes looked sharp with his crosses and free kicks as he took part in what looked like Gordon Igesund’s starting line-up.

The Slovakia-based defender was visibly excited about the prospect of earning his first cap for his birth country.

“It’s good to be here and I am excited that I will get a chance of playing for my country. It has always been my dream to play for South Africa and now I am here it’s unbelievable,” said the 26-year-old.

He said he was happy with the resounding welcome he received from the players, particularly as he did not know most of them.

“I only knew a few guys from the previous games and it was good to finally meet them personally. I was also happy with the training session as it is not always easy to do well against people you don’t know, but they made me feel at home and I already feel part of the family.”

He said he expected a tough encounter against Poland on Friday but believes Bafana would be up to the challenge.

The arrival of midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi meant Bafana had a full complement of players.

The Crystal Palace player was delayed in England and his visa was only issued this morning.

Although he did not take part in the morning training session, the midfielder joined the team at their training ground and stretched on the sidelines.

Kickoff for the friendly has been changed to 8.45pm on Friday.
